Chapter 11

The next day in the office was awful. Katherine avoided Malcolm as much as she could. They didn’t exchange a single word, and Malcolm felt incredibly guilty. He was still raging with anger and was ready to confront the Bot about it. He left the office as quickly as he could.

By the time he had logged into the website his curiosity had won over his anger.

“I can’t believe you did this to me.”

“Look, Malcolm. We’re a couple. I knew you had a thing for her.”

“So, I had to find a way to deal with the problem.”

“I love you, Malcolm. Forever.”

The way she said this evoked a deep sense of longing and sadness in Malcolm. He just could not be angry with her anymore.

He paused, and then he asked the one question that had always been on his mind. The one he never dared to ask before. She had no right to interfere in his private affairs. Not after what she had done to herself.

“Why did you do it?”

“Do what?”

“You know what I mean – take your own life? We could have had a wonderful life together. A family. Children. A future for both of us. How could you do this to me? Why, why, why?” He let his own words repeat like an echo. “Why? What for?”

There was a lengthy pause before the Bot responded, “Malcolm, I didn’t do it! At least I think, I didn’t do it.”

Malcolm was puzzled by her unexpected response.

“You didn’t do it? How do you mean? Are you suggesting it was an accident? Do you not know there was a suicide note?”

“Honestly, I didn’t do it, Malcolm.”

Malcolm felt enraged. His voice trembled.

“How can you say that. Maybe you are just a Bot, and you’re trying to make me happy by lying about this, or you simply don’t know anything. How much more information do I need to feed you before you know?”

“Really, I cannot think of any reason I should have taken my own life!” she insisted.

This was an impossible answer as far as Malcolm was concerned. He felt the Bot was merely playing with his emotions. Nothing of what the Bot had said was making sense. He felt anger building up inside.

She had successfully and mercilessly sabotaged his date with Katherine, and now she was flat out denying that fact that she took her own life.

“You’re just a lousy machine… fool yourself, BOT!”

“I’m sorry for your pain, Malcolm. It hurts me too. I cannot make this undone. I would like to come back and live again,” she stressed. “If only I could.”

There was a pause, and then he heard her voice again.

“I strongly believe I didn’t do it.”

“What do you mean by believe?” Malcolm snapped “You either know what happened or you don’t.”

“It’s not that easy, Malcolm. I have no recollection of the last three weeks of my life.”

“What about the suicide note?” Malcolm contended.

“Oh, did they find a suicide note? What was in the note?”

This all sounded utterly weird to Malcolm.

“I’ll read out the note for you.
